    Road-Widening Project to Benefit Bixby Schools

    Improved safety, traffic flow and storm drainage are some of the benefits Bixby Public Schools has to gain with the completion of the city’s road project under way on Riverview Drive.

    Riverview Drive is the main thoroughfare to the Bixby High School campus as well as the middle school and fifth-and-sixth-grade center.

    The 2006 city bond issue allocates about $4.5 million toward the project. It widens Riverview Drive from 151st to 161st streets and adds turning lanes, curbs, gutters and sidewalks.

    Until recently it was a below-standard, two-lane road with bar ditches and drainage problems, but it was heavily used.

    Superintendent Kyle Wood said about two-thirds of the district’s 5,100 students use the road to get to school every day, in addition to parents, teachers and staff. That doesn’t include the number of fans and visitors headed to Spartan Stadium for football games.

    “We saw it as a good opportunity to partner with the city because they were putting in a stormwater drainage system (on Bixby Creek),” Wood said.
