Bixby Park and Trail System Expansion

BIXBY – Planned expansions to the city’s parks and trail system will make it the envy of Tulsa County, city officials say.

Construction is expected to begin this month on a $5 million expansion of the Bentley Park Sports Complex and a $100,000 extension of jogging trails at Washington Irving Memorial Park.

The city also plans to add up to 15 miles of trails in coming years, including branches that would join with Tulsa’s trails to form a massive loop along the Arkansas River and the Creek Turnpike.

“Once we get our loop (to the Creek Turnpike), that will absolutely make us one of the best trail systems anywhere,” Mayor Ray Bowen said. “We’ve already got one of the best in all of Tulsa County.”

The city has about eight miles of jogging trails, he said.

The longest – the Fry Creek Trail, which begins at Bentley Park at Memorial Drive and 148th Street, crosses an Arkansas River pedestrian bridge and ends near 124th Street between Memorial Drive and Sheridan Road – would be the backbone of the Arkansas River loop.
